Hello there! ˗ˏˋ ★ ˎˊ˗

My name is Brie E Henderson, and I am a character and costume designer for both feature film and TV animation. I've had the pleasure and honor of working on some incredible projects like Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse, My Dad The Bounty Hunter, Eyes of Wakanda, and several others that have been incredibly fulfilling. I've also spent the better part of 2024 teaching Intermediate and Advanced Illustration at OTIS in Los Angeles. For the past few years, I've often combined my character and costume design course, but for 2025, I want to shake things up a bit!

So here's what I've got planned for us:

Time: Mondays and Thursdays at 5PM PST - 7:30PM PST Starting January 13th 2025 - Jan 15th 2026

Class size : 12

Tuition: US$ 2-4k

Deadline: January 6th 2025

Format: Class will meet twice a week on Google meet; classes are recorded.

Discord: Community means the world to me, and so there will be a server made just for you. There you'll be able to upload homework and classwork, have hangout streaming sessions, movie nights, find resources and then some! The link to the server will be sent out January 6th!

Office Hours: I am available for 1x1's as needed!

In this 4 quarter course, I will take you through the ins and outs of costume design; teaching you my methods on research and it's importance, costume design in cinema, clothing through the ages and even, throughout different cultures. In each quarter students will have one major project, several lectures, one guest speaker, thought provoking assignments, and industry standard objectives. Over the course of the year, students will strengthen their draftsmanship, their quick study skills, fabric rendering and their understanding of folds, as well as other key observational studies.

Students will be given the year to develop their costume design skills with the hopes of creating several strong pieces fit for their portfolio. While this course is aimed at costume designers for animation, all are welcome. I urge you to use this time to find and strengthen your own unique voices as artists and to design what makes you happy, first and foremost.

Layout:

Q1 (Spring): Mon Jan 13 - Thurs Mar 27 - Contemporary Costume Design

Q2 (Summer): Mon April 21 - Thurs July 3rd - Period Costume Design

Q3 (Autumn): Mon July 28 - Thurs Oct 10 - Futuristic Costume Design

Q4 (Winter): Mon Nov 3rd - Thurs Jan 15th - Fantasy Costume Design

There is a 3 week break after each quarter to rest and recharge!

A couple of prerequisites:

You must already have an existing portfolio.

You must have experience and access to a digital painting program such as Photoshop, Procreate, and or Clip Studio Paint. However, I will strictly be working in Photoshop.

You must be dedicated to showing up to class, completing your work, and participating. Treat my class as you would a normal university level class. If you fall too far behind in class, it will slow you and me down.

Communication is key.

My class is very critique heavy, and I won't be the only one to give critiques! I guide you while you critique one another's work in a professional manner.

Upholding a safe and healthy community on Discord (there are rules and such laid out on the Discord server that you will be expected to follow.)

Your imagination. We are artists! Let's push against those mental boxes that we've put ourselves in, and surprise ourselves with things we've never drawn before!

I am extremely excited to teach you and guide you and learn from you as the year goes on. It's going to be a wonderful time.

FAQ's! (I'll write these out as I get them!)

Am I allowed to purchase the first half of the class now, and then purchase the other half later down the line? Yes! You are able to do that. The deadline for purchasing Q3 & Q4 is July 14th!

Am I allowed to purchase the Q3 & Q4, but not Q1 & Q2? No. As this is a year long course, and each quarter builds upon the last. You are not able to drop into the class half way through as it will throw off the flow that we (the class) will have made by then.

Am I allowed to pay in installments? Yes! You are allowed to pay in installments of $500! If you are taking only one half of the course, then you'll pay in installments of 4. If you are taking the whole course, you'll pay in installments of 8. You must email me before you choose to pay in installments.
